Great seafood place. The menu bit look boring but everything is so much more than expected. The main seafood - either fried or broiled - are cooked to perfection. All the sides are great especially the baked pineapple. The homemade rolls and desserts just add to the dining experience. This is must stop if you are in Hoopers Island!!

Honestly, nothing special about this place. The food is decent but nothing great. It appears to be the only restaurant in the area and greatly benefits from the lack of competition. The decor is abysmal and badly needs to be updated. (Minus 1 star) The soft shell crab sandwich came out on two pieces of white bread..un-toasted. The food is a 3. The pricing is reasonable.

This is by far the best seafood place i've been that serves true MARYLAND crabs, crab cakes, especially the best Baked Pineapple i have ever tasted. The broiled crab cake was so delicious. It was all crab meat, no filler...sooooo meaty! My other favorite is the fried soft shell crabs :) it was fresh and crunchy, fried to perfection.. The sides were delicious. My favorite was definitely the baked pineapple. It is making my mouth water just writing about it...so make sure you order that!!! The atmosphere was awesome, the servers were nice and pleasant. we even met the owner and he was really nice and welcoming!!! Lastly, the view of the chesapeake with pretty :) This place is definitely worth the 2 hr drive from DC! Can't wait to go back.

Simple, freshly caught and homemade seafood dinners. Party of 5 for an early Friday night dinner. Flounder was fresh and flaky. Coconut shrimp was delightful--especially with the baked pineapple. Maryland Crab soup was a highlight with more crab than broth--wow! Fresh, hot rolls were yummy as well.

Pretty basic place with standard menu. Service was a bit disorganized. The food quality though is really good. My wife ordered the Maryland crab soup. When it arrived, she was disappointed - looked just like a bowl of vegetable soup. However, once she stirred it up, the amount of crab meat turned the soup white! My crab cake didn't look like much, but it was almost all lump crab meat and not much filler. Good place to go for good basic Easter shore food.

Rockfish. Crab. Beer. Great little Eastern Shore restaurant. But get there early. Things run on Dorchester County time. Which means, well, they aren't in the rush folks in DC are. And if you show up on Friday night on the last weekend of deer season, expect to wait even longer. But have no fear, the waitresses are top notch and friendly, and will ensure your drinks are never empty. Plus, everyone has a great time, and the time does fly when caught up in conversation.

This is the seafood place you've been looking for your whole life. On the edge of the earth, but well worth the trip if you're exploring the Eastern Shore/Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. This is not the fanciest looking restaurant inside. The crowd was mostly locals the night we were there. We snagged a table by the window to watch the sunset over the Chesapeake. And then, oh my, the food. We had the cream of crab soup and crab balls to start. Some of the tastiest crab I've ever had. Since the crab is so fresh -- directly sourced from crab houses on the island -- we ordered the crab trio (a crab cake, imperial crab and softcrab) and the seafood platter (clam strips, flounder, scallops, shrimp and crab cake). The crab was absolutely top notch but the flounder was the finest I've ever had. Would be worth the drive from Cambridge for the flounder alone, in my opinion.

What a great place tucked away at the edge of the earth! It is a large building by the water. It is airy and light with big windows. The wait staff is really nice and friendly - the waitress we had was so attentive and humorous. The food was really amazing and the seafood tasted noticeably fresh. The soups were piping hot and delicious. The crab cake and fish and chips were wonderful. My friend had rice pudding, which she said was nice, and I had the apple pie a la mode, which was fabulous. I was very impressed and I'm looking forward to the next time I'm over in the middle of nowhere so that I can go again!

We visited Old Salty's last August and had a wonderful time. We called right before they were done serving for the night but were told they would wait for us. they even gave us directions right to them. We were very impressed with the courteous and warm service and more so with the food. It was great. Very fresh and excellent beer choices. A gem.

We had the Jumbo Lump Crab Imperial and it is the best I've had on the Eastern Shore so far!! Just remember to go ahead and seat yourself! You won't be disappointed if you have to wait a little bit. I promise! NOTE: Skip the mac n cheese.

Found this place on a motorcycle ride through Blackwater Refuge and down to Hooper's island, and loved it. The cream of crab soup was seasoned just right, and while thinner than we were used to, was loaded with crab. The deluxe crab cake was one of the best I've had, and I'm a native Marylander and crab lover. The fish sandwich was lightly breaded and my husband loved the coleslaw. We all loved the rolls - fresh made, and you can't beat their meringue pies. Perhaps the best part was how friendly the waitress was. She told us the history of the building, answered our questions about living on the island, and even took us back into the old multi-purpose room. We are definitely looking forward to our next visit :)

The Old Salty's Deluxe Crabcake is, by far, the best Chesapeake Bay style Crabcake that I've ever had (and I consider myself to be a bit of a crabcake snob). It is delicate and composed of unbelievably large lumps of tender crabmeat. The service here is abundantly sweet and kind and though I am from the other shore in Maryland and only visit a few times a year, I am recognized and greeted like a friend. The speed of service has never been lacking, but since the journey to get there is a long one (through the most exquisite natural scenic beauty that Maryland has to offer) I want to savor my meal and my time here. This is a cozy, family restaurant so don't expect anything fancy, but the quality of the food and the journey to get there are well worth the trip.

Old Salty's is located in the middle of nowhere below Blackwater Refuge. We decided to try the place for lunch when we were staying at the Hyatt Regency in Cambridge, MD. On the way down to the restaurant we took the scenic route and checked out Taylor's Island Wildlife area. We saw many historic churches, simple living, along with deer, turkey, and even a bald eagle. Old Salty's is located in a renovated old school building that was used until around 1970. The place wasn't very crowded but worth the trip. Very casual... We wanted a light lunch...so my wife and daughter ordered a bowl of cream of crab soup. We decided to get 6 crab balls to share as an appetizer, and I ordered the fresh fish sandwich. What a pleasant surprise! The cream of crab soup was the best I ever tasted. My 5 year old daughter wasn't that hungry so I scoffed down her soup which contained crab, cream, and more crab... I'll admit that I never had crab balls before and my expectations were pretty low since I knew these were fried. I will definitely get these again. It was like getting 6 mini crab cakes. These were lightly breaded, filled with crabmeat, and very puffy. Hard to describe, but you must try! When I inquired about the fish sandwich. I was told it was fried fresh flounder on s sub roll. This was an understatement....The fish was again lightly breaded and huge. The sub roll was homemade and the softest bread I may have ever had. The bread tasted liked it was made about an hour earlier. My sandwich included lettuce, tomato, and tarter sauce on the side. Waitress was very friendy. I am told all three islands only have about 420 people on them....so check out this remote little hideout.

If you like crab, THIS IS THE PLACE. This is probably the only restaurant within 45 minutes of this location. One of us had the crab cakes; the other had the crab stuff mushrooms. Very rich and very delicious. The onion rings were good as was the kale. The rolls were nasty, doughy white things that one should not eat. The service was quite good. Being in the area all day we also got a fish sandwich for take-out at lunch t ime. It would have been excellent had it not been on a spongy white bun. Overall? Recommended! Just avoid eating bread there. (Maybe they'll learn about wheat, rye, multi-grain, etc before our next visit!)

Great crab cake sandwich, broiled all lump crab meat! The cream of crab was great too, thick and loaded with crab meat.

Old Salty's is an authentic piece of Americana and a wonderful place to eat on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Housed in a former schoolhouse on tiny Hooper's Island, Old Salty's offers sea and marsh views and prepares crab the way it was meant to be cooked. The jumbo crabcake is all lump crabmeat-- no fillers. The broiled rendition is delicate, immensely flavorful, and perfectly moist. A worthy equal of the crabcake is the soft shell crab, fresh and perfectly cooked. Or get both in a combination offering. This is how crab was meant to be enjoyed. The crab on your plate will have been harvested in local waters. If crab is not your thing, don't worry. Other worthy offerings include an excellent fried chicken-- crisp coating giving way to succulent meat, country ham and spiced shrimp.0 Side dishes are excellent. The dinner rolls are a must, as are the stewed tomatoes. If you visit in summer or fall, seasonal local vegetables will likely be offered alongside the (excellent) year round options. Old Salty's isn't an upscale dining experience, and that helps make it memorable. The seating is comfortable but plain and the waitresses are friendly and efficient. This establishment harkens back to simpler times, staking its reputation on straightforward, high quality cooking and service. Hooper's Island is also a worthwhile destination. Drive out to the spit of land at the island's far end and you'll be surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay. En route, visit the lovely Blackwater Wildlife Refuge. And I'm told that the Hooper's Island crab factories, including the original A.E. Phillips plant, can be toured in weekday mornings. If you're visiting Maryland's Eastern Shore, include Old Salty's and Hooper's Island on your itinerary.

We are visiting DC and wanted Maryland crab cakes. I was reading about the east shore of MD. I saw the reviews on this place and decided this is the place and it did not disappoint . The waitress offered us two different crab soups we got the cream of crab, but she also brought us the broth based one as well. They were both delicious. We loved the broiled crab cake with the baked pineapple side, delicious again with lots of crab and very moist. The bread pudding was also very good. Decor is 80s and food presentation is too, but as long as the food tastes great who cares.

It is hard to get to Hooper's Island, MD. and, if not for Old Salty's, once you got there, there'd be nothing to do, no place to spend a dime. Hooper's is a distant, desolate swampy waterfront environment. What they have is seafood, and only Old Salty's cooks and sells it to visitors in a nice, Old School space. Even the kitchen and restrooms have a waterview. Both the Crab Vegetable soup and the cream of Crab soup are delicious, don't miss them. The broiled seafood platter ( or its fried cousin) are great. Crabcake is one of the best. Service is sharp, smart and timely. The only reason we'd go back to the island, having seen it once, would be to eat again at Old Salty's. Try it!

Excellent! She Crab soup is unreal. Oysters as fresh as you can get without going to the beds and getting them yourself. Every year my son, Dad and I are down there for Sika Deer season. We rent a beautiful home across island from Old Salty's and that's where we eat, EVERY NIGHT, for dinner! We live 25 minutes from midtown Manhattan and Old Salty's is as good as it gets for fresh shellfish, crab cakes, chowders...we look forward to our dinners almost as much as the trip itself every year!

I ate here for the first time during Saturday's lunch. Every single thing that I ordered was amazing. I ordered the fish filet sandwich, the crab cake platter (with sides of pickled beets, kale, and homemade dinner rolls), the baked pineapple, and finally strawberry shortcake. My favorite selections were the fish filet sandwich and pickled beets. The fish filet sandwich was simply a generous piece of fried fish inside a warm roll. I recommend ordering the pickled beets as a side dish as well as the baked pineapple, which consisted of folds of bread with pineapple layered inside. My friend ordered the flounder fillet platter (with sides of baked sweet potato and onion rings), fish filet sandwich, and chocolate meringue pie. He was happy, too. The service is great. Our waiter, Tracy, was very attentive and hospitable. She made our meal a wonderful experience. We even had a chance to meet the owner, Jay. We drove all the way from the DC area to come here (we live about 2.5 hours away). If you are on your way to Ocean City, Cambridge, or the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, I highly recommend a visit to Old Salty's. We spent about $55 between the two of us.

Tried a food pretzel for the first time. Very good and plenty to share. Best mixed veggies that I have ever had anywhere. Worth the drive to Hoopers Island. Lot of the seafood is local. Fresh!!!!!!! Served hot and plentiful servings. Waitstaff is very good.

Old Salty's is a cute seafood restaurant located in Fishing Creek, MD. It's a little seaside town off of Hoopers Island road, and while it takes about 2.5 hours to get there, it's a solid restaurant to go to if you're in the Eastern Shore area. It's a no-frill place that is known for their Deluxe Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes and their Prime Rib. Unfortunately, their Prime Rib is only served on Fridays and Saturdays. However, we ordered their crabcakes, Stuffed Shrimp, and 1/2 a pound of Steamed Shrimp as an appetizer. The crabcakes had nice juicy bits of crab meat, not as much breading/fillings, and it was more of a mound-shape rather than the softball-shape I am used to at Faidley's. I think it would have been good with some hot sauce, but I tried it as how the restaurant served it up. It came with a side of cocktail sauce that had a kick to it (one of the best tasting cocktail sauce I've tasted!). The stuffed shrimp were basically lump crab wrapped around a shrimp - 3 pieces come with with a side of spicy cocktail sauce. They were slightly liquidy from the crab meat juice. The steamed shrimp were a good size, sprinkled with Old Bay seasoning after it was steamed. I think it would have been good if they steamed it with the seasoning so there would have been more flavor throughout the shrimp. All in all, you can tell that each of the seafood was fresh and had a slight ocean-y taste. Each of the platters come with 2 choices of sides and their homemade roll; we had the french fries, the baked pineapple, corn on the cob, and coleslaw. The french fries were forgettable (you would have to add your own salt/pepper); the baked pineapple was great as a dessert (not too sweet; chunks of pineapple in a pound cake consistency); the corn on the cob tasted a bit odd, and not the sweet corn as I was hoping for, so that wasn't finished; and, the coleslaw had a nice tang and was delicious. The rolls were small, but nice and soft! Service was okay, and the prices were reasonable for a seafood place. You can see the creek behind the place, which gives you a nice view. There's also a little gift shop with Old Salty's t-shirts and other little country-esque knick knacks. Driving 2.5 hours may be a stretch, but definitely a place to try out if you ever were in the area. +crabcakes (no fillers) +baked pineapple +coleslaw

Old Salty's has the absolute BEST seafood, hands down! Especially the cream of crab soup, crab imperial, side dishes, and fish. The warm homemade dinner rolls they serve are to die for. I could fill up on those alone. It is worth the 25 minute drive just to get a big, heaping bowl of cream of crab soup and those savory dinner rolls. They use big chunks of jumbo lump FRESH local crabmeat in the soup and other dishes. Writing this review is making me hungry!

When in Dorchester County Maryland no matter if your are on the way to and from Ocean City, doing Iron Man competitions, biking, fishing, birding or touring the historic sites schedule time to drive to Hooper's Island and dine for lunch or dinner at Old Salty's Restaurant located at Fishing Creek. Visually the drive to the island offers panoramic views of the Chesapeake Bay on one side and the Honga River on the other side and on the narrow sections of Hooper's Islands you can see both. Old Salty's is located in the old high school, which to this day the gymnasium hosts many a special event from weddings to an upcoming concert from Ronny Dove on September 22. This is destination dining you need to drive there, as many do and have done repeatedly. Old Salty's is not fancy in the sense of high end surroundings, in fact, that would deter from country feel, the sense of family dining. Maryland crab meat, oysters and rockfish are the center of the plate literally and figuratively at Old Salty's, all come from the waters right there off Hooper's Island where fishing, harvesting oysters and crabbing have been a way of life for centuries. We left it up to Old Salty's owner Jay Newcomb to bring us samples of what he calls his specialties. A sampling of the lump crabmeat imperial topped plump oyster almost had me in tears - fresh, briny, rich and redolent of the bay waters with a hidden treasure, a real pearl. Newcomb has been the owner of Old Salty's for the past nine years, the previous owner had it for twenty years prior. Newcomb enhanced the offerings getting away from a lot of the fried foods, going to steamed-to-order sides like the squash medley with corn, kale, asparagus or the housemade cucumber and onion salad. Old Salty's offers two types of crab cakes both excellent but go for the gusto and get the broiled jumbo lump deluxe crab cake in a sandwich or on a platter. And know that it is always Maryland crabmeat even in the off season when Newcomb uses the crabmeat he had packed and pasteurized right there on Hooper's Island. If you have a "real hankerin" for Maryland blue crab ask for the crab trio; a soft shell crab, crab cake and crab imperial, choose two sides and enjoy the freshly made yeast rolls - in fact, Newcomb took me back to the kitchen when they were coming out of the oven. If for any reason someone in your party isn't into seafood, Old Salty's offers fried chicken, ham and prime cuts of beef and on Friday and Saturday nights a king cut of prime rib. Our view was just awe inspiring looking out over the Honga River but one of the best views at Old Salty's was seeing his selection of pies cooling; coconut cream, lemon and chocolate and Jay didn't disappoint sending out the lemon and chocolate and his very decadent bread pudding. Hooper's Island has its own rich history from growing tobacco early on to the birthplace of a national institution, Phillips Seafood who happens to be celebrating their 100th year to the new, innovative ways in aquaculture from Chesapeake Gold Oysters whose 3rd generation watermen are securing a future for Maryland's oyster industry. When the Travel Channel's Andrew Zimmern visited Dorchester County, he visited Old Salty's Restaurant calling it "restaurant paradise." Fair warning, once you check out the slideshow you will be craving at least one if not more of Old Salty's culinary offerings. Make the time, make the trip and make sure you get a piece of pie.

You must eat here if you are anywhere on the Eastern Shore -- it's absolutely worth a drive down to Hoopers Island. Charming and friendly service, the best crabcake I've ever had, beautiful views of the Chesapeake. They have a great selection of seafood and they happily accommodated the dietary needs of my sister, who is a vegan, even though vegan options weren't immediately apparent on the menu. My entire family of avid lifelong seafood eaters loved this place... Don't miss it!

No question that this is out in nowhere land, but if you are ever in the area of Fishing Creek on Hooper's Island, this is the place to stop. Actually, it's the only place to stop, but it is really really, good. (Make sure you check the time they are open). Locally caught seafood is excellent. The decor is very "family style" but the staff was efficient and the service was excellent. Full bar service. I had delux crab cakes and I'm still trying to figure out how they got the crab meat to remain in a cake form - there was no "filler" at all, just crab meat. If the decor was a little more "up scale" I'd give it a 5-star rating

We drove 2 hours from Alexandria, VA to Old Salty's and the only thing I am sorry about is that I didn't know about this place BEFORE now! Crab cake - to. die. for. -- quite possibly the best I've ever had! Lemon Meringue pie - deeeeee-Licious! Quite an extensive menu - lots of things to choose from! WE WILL BE BACK - MANY TIMES TO COME!!!
